A citizens’ group in Clearwater is actively working to place a referendum on the upcoming August ballot, aiming to transfer the authority over street privatization from city officials directly to the voters. The initiative, known as “Save the Garden,” has successfully gathered over 8,000 petition signatures, surpassing the required 10% of registered voters to advance the proposal.
If approved, this measure would mandate that any decision to privatize public streets in Clearwater receive direct voter approval, rather than being determined solely by the City Council. Proponents argue that this change would enhance transparency and ensure that community members have a direct voice in decisions affecting public infrastructure.
As the initiative progresses, it underscores a growing desire among residents for increased participation in local governance, particularly concerning the management and privatization of public assets.
